Standoff A protrusion at the bottom of the connector used to raise it off the PCB to aid in board inspection, flux removal and cleaning.
STP Shielded Twisted Pair - Type of copper wires that are wound together to cancel the effect of electrical noise.
strain-relief A connector accessory used to give protection to the IDT connections when installing or extracting the cable assembly.
Strip To remove insulation from a wire or cable
surface mount A connector attached directly to the surface of a printed circuit board, rather than by means of holes through the board.
Tab Used to describe the flat blade portion of certain terminals or contacts, e.g.; a solder tab
thermoplastic A type of plastic which can be remelted a number of times without any important change in properties. PVC and nylon are examples of thermoplastics.
threaded insert A hardware accessory installed in mounting flanges to allow the use of a threaded screw.
thru-hole connector A connector with pins designed to extend through a drilled hole in a PCB with the exposed tip of the contact soldered. This thru-hole in the PCB is plated to establish electrical connection with the pins.
Tolerance The allowable variations in measurements within which an item is judged acceptable.
